Crothers & Co is a multidisciplinary design studio that seeks joy in the mundane and never forgets that play is a necessity. Although our roots are fiercely inspired by old world design we aren’t afraid to push the envelop of pattern, colour and form.
Kate Crothers is the creative force behind Crothers & Co. Kate straddles interior, floral and garden design with ease, having had the good fortune to have spent a lifetime in all three arenas, honing skills and aesthetic to be able to offer a unique take on design across the board.
Kate’s interiors are whimsical and colourful, but she manages to pull all the pieces together in a way that immediately puts you at ease when you enter the space. She is heavily influenced by traditional architecture and design after spending a childhood volunteering at a Pioneer village, the greatest impact was the handicraft involved in every utilitarian object, and a quiet but colourful colour pallet focusing on natural dyes and plant materials.
Kate’s gardens are a cacophony of texture and colour, her plant forward design sets her apart from the average landscape designer. Kate designs perennial heavy gardens that provide interest and architecture through all four seasons. She believes gardens should be an adventure, with a discovery to be had around every corner, in every season. Her keen eye for compilation creates a garden that feels both serene and stimulating.
Large scale floral installations is where Kate truly gets to stretch her creative spirit. Informed by the natural landscape, she builds otherworldly immersive installations that don’t accept limitations. Her designs are spontaneous and seasonal, sustainability is a priority in all of her work and she leans heavily on locally foraged fauna and dried florals to achieve this goal. She also farms a large component of her medium, giving her complete control over colour pallet and form, which starts at seed selection through to drying.
